Serene Natural Garden
THE DETAILS:
My client’s backyard needed an overhaul—it lacked flow, felt disjointed, and just didn’t invite use. They wanted a space to entertain family, host events, and have weddings, while respecting the existing architecture and natural landscape. Our goal was to seamlessly connect spaces while ensuring they were both beautiful and functional.
From grading the yard, we discovered a hidden gem: a non-functional water feature. With a little TLC, it was revived as a flowing fountain that enhanced the backyard’s atmosphere. We designed a cozy outdoor fireplace with a privacy wall and unique lighting that the homeowner had envisioned. By adding strategically placed boulders, natural stone retaining walls, and creating paths, we were able to create accessible, connected spaces without disrupting the mature trees.
A standout feature of the project was an old bridge—originally dilapidated—that we restored to provide a walkway over a creek during rainstorms. Working around the elevation changes, we transformed this uneven space into tiered areas for gatherings and personal retreat.
Privacy hedges helped buffer the noise from the busy road, and new, lush vegetation provided a serene ambiance. This was paired with lighting elements that highlighted trees and created a subtle glow, making evenings in the backyard feel magical. The addition of a fire pit and several seating areas means Dan and Shelby now have a variety of spaces to relax, entertain, and connect with nature.
Now, this once-neglected yard has become a beloved extension of their home, hosting social gatherings, and creating lasting memories.
