Starting with a neglected 1950s layout, this transformation was all about making a cozy, welcoming outdoor retreat that flowed beautifully from the indoors. The project took on the unique challenge of creating multiple living spaces within a limited area, balancing aesthetics and functionality. We worked closely with the client and contractor to integrate the new layout, ensuring each space felt connected while adding standout features to bring character.
The design focused on extending the indoor space outward, starting with a raised patio featuring an outdoor kitchen and seating around a fire pit—a perfect gathering spot for family and friends. Stepping down into the lawn area, there’s now room for movie nights or cozying up by a custom fireplace with a pizza oven—a personal touch to complement the client’s love for entertaining.
Thoughtfully placed greenery, including privacy hedges and relocated trees, softened the space and created a serene atmosphere. The use of rustic materials tied each area together, while subtle lighting added an inviting glow at dusk.
This project wasn’t without its challenges: working within a tight area, coordinating construction near the house, and waiting for transplanted trees to settle. But the results speak for themselves. The backyard has become a favorite spot for family gatherings, with space for outdoor games, s’mores by the fire, and plenty of memories made. The blend of comfort and style has turned an underutilized space into an extension of their lifestyle—one that feels as timeless as it is functional.
